The Importance of Hospital Transparency

Tuesday, January 5, 2016

I recently attended The Leapfrog Group’s “Living the Vision” 15th Anniversary Gala & Annual Meeting. One session was entitled “Bringing Patients to the Boardroom.”

During that session Bob and Barbara Malizzo told the story about how their 39-year-old daughter had died from a medical error at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). The twist - the hospital acknowledged the error immediately. While it did not take away the pain, it did provide solace and closure. They now serve on the Patient Safety Review Board at UIC.

Please see their story here:

We ask hospitals to be transparent with all kinds of information, but being transparent immediately about errors in care should be at the forefront of the conversation.
